Mrs. Potato Head: Does a new face come with a warranty?

Unarguably, this is the deepest song I’ve heard in a long time.

It deals with some themes that I write regularly about, like self love, and the power of being yourself.

Today, I’ll be breaking down this song and writing about my views on it. If you’d like to listen to this song, you can find it at the end of this post.

Lyrics// ♥

Verse 1.

If you weren’t born with it
You can buy a couple ornaments
Just be sure to read the warning, kids
‘Cause pretty soon you’ll be bored of it
Sexual, hey girl if you wanna feel sexual
You can always call up a professional
They stick pins in you like a vegetable

{What this means}

You’re pretty? Not pretty enough for society. In this day and age, regardless of how you naturally look, the media will tell you that you could enhance something. Lip fillers, for a big pout. A face lift, because you can’t ‘let yourself go’ can you? Oh no, no. If you want to look sexual (Which is your job, ladies.) If you’re desirable to a male, you’ve done well.

Thinking of plastic surgery? There’s two sides to everything, remember that. The plastic surgery industry is big- multi billion dollar big. Think your doctor will CARE if you aren’t happy? Too bad for you. They’ll be laughing. Kids, read the warnings. Beauty ideals are constantly changing and evolving.

Pins; the needles used in procedures. ‘Vegetable’ refers to Mrs Potato head, who, it suggests, lacks individuality and has been strung along by the various lies of society.

Kids forever, kids forever
Baby soft skin turns into leather
Don’t be dramatic it’s only some plastic
No one will love you if you’re unattractive

{What this means}

As we grew up, we lost our childish innocence, our ‘rose colored glasses’ view. Maybe we grew up too fast. We were too naive for our own good. We were taught that it’s better to be fake than undesirable through societies eyes. Beauty is everything now. However, it fades, and you’ve got to have some way to get it back.

Oh Mrs. Potato Head tell me
Is it true that pain is beauty?
Does a new face come with a warranty?
Will a pretty face make it better?
Oh Mr. Potato Head tell me
How did you afford her surgery?
Do you swear you’ll stay forever
Even if her face don’t stay together
Even if her face don’t stay together

{What this means}

Mr and Mrs Potato head: Husband and wife. Has removable body parts that can be placed anywhere. Potatoes= Vegetable. i.e (Person who cannot think for themselves.)

“Is it true that pain is beauty?” Mrs. Potato Head, tell me, do you feel beautiful? Because if you don’t, you can’t go back. You’re as plastic as a barbie doll. Mr Potato Head, do you have a well paying job? You must to be able to afford her surgery. You go to great lengths to change what is already beautiful.

If her face falls apart, if she comes out with a botched surgery, will you stay by her side? Promise me you’ll stay forever. Forever is a long time, isn’t it?

{Verse 2}

If you want a little more confidence
Potatoes turn to french fries, yeah it’s common sense
All you need’s a couple more condiments
And a hundred thousand dollars for some compliments
It’s such a waste
When little girls grow into their mother’s face
But little girls are learning how to cut and paste
And pucker up their lips until they suffocate

{What this means}

Plastic surgery can fix anything. Including confidence issue, says oh so wise society.

French fries.. in their original form, no thanks. But cut up, skinned, cooked? We’ll go crazy for them. Plastic surgery.. can you see the similarities? It’s all changing, getting rid of what you don’t want, and coming out with something so much better.

All you need is a little bit of this and that, a man with a well paying job. Got 100,000 dollars Mr Potato Head? Now you’ll get compliments. Pour in.

You grow up into your mother’s image, but this comes with a twist. Society has normalised the ‘cutting and pasting’ of our bodies. The making of perfection.

Overall storyline;

Crybaby (Melanie Martinez fictional alter ego) is sitting down, watching television. She is eating a cookie when an advertisement for ‘dolly diet pills’ comes on. She watches intently. Next, an advertisement for blonde wigs.

Crybaby goes into the bathroom, staring at herself, crying. As if only suddenly aware of her ‘flaws’. She attempts to ‘fix herself’. Puts on a wig, pops a pill and stuffs tissue down her bra.

Going back to watching television, a show comes on. Mr and Mrs Potato head. Mrs has just come home and greets her husband at the door. He presents her with flowers and a smile. Following him into her bedroom, he gives her a necklace. Then, she finds out she’s booked in for a facelift.

Mr and Mrs Potato head arrive at the Doctors. Mrs Potato Head has been forced by her husband into getting the surgery done. He hands over 100,000 dollars and they’re taken into an operating theater where Mr Potato Head gives instructions on what to ‘fix’.

Mrs Potato Head comes out with a botched surgery. She is almost lifeless. When Mr Potato Head finds out, he tries to make it better, giving her a blonde wig to wear over her hair. Mrs Potato Head was hopeful, but her smile died when she realised he had made a mistake. That really only fell on her however, the consequences.

After this, her husband leaves her, giving flowers to another woman.

Crybaby realises that she is beautiful just the way she is.

-Don’t kill the flowers growing inside you for somebody who can’t appreciate the way you bloom.
