Hello lovelies!
I hope you’re all well. While we’re spending more time at home and in our rooms, it’s a nice idea to focus on how we can make this space more comfortable. Lately I’ve felt inspired by beautiful bohemian design that embraces natural elements, like plant life and wooden tones.
It’s important to remember that your bedroom goes beyond being a place to sleep- it’s what you’ll wake up to every morning and where you’ll unwind after a long day. An ideal bedroom serves the purpose of being both functional and stylish, a balance that is trickier to strike than you might imagine. For these reasons, the design of your most frequented space should remain fluid. Edit frequently and ruthlessly and by way of this, you’ll find yourself with the space you always pictured.
Find a rug
Rugs are a simple and brilliant way to ground a space. No matter how small, they can bring a space together and make your furniture seem less all over the place- give it a more intentional look. This is why rugs that sit under large furniture like sofas and beds are so popular. While the space you have might not allow for that, you can always get a small rug. This is a trend in all the bedrooms above!
I personally have a rug at the head of my bed. I have carpeted floors but I wouldn’t say the two clash.
Select artwork
Patterns and line drawings are always a good choice in terms of artworks. They add that modern, minimalistic touch and aren’t too heavy on the eyes. Think block colours, florals and plants. Artwork, posters and prints are what adds visual interest to your space so do what works for you. If you want something bright and engaging, you’ll find a place for it!
Pay attention to size and placement. A big, blank wall will need a larger artwork or a series of smaller prints, perhaps in the style of a photo wall. Follow a theme, always, and make sure you’re happy to look at what you choose day in and day out. As with everything though, a seasonal refresh is always a good idea. If you’re someone who changes their taste frequently, buy timeless artwork and don’t spend a fortune. Make it easily interchangeable or able to work in with various design styles.
Seek simplicity
Never live with excess- clutter is not the way to go. A big contributor to developing a positive mindset is living in a clean, organised space. As most of you would know, I began my journey to minimalism in 2018 and haven’t looked back since. It’s brought me a lot of peace and joy. I’ve been able to pick and refine my style and design a space perfect for my needs and wants. It’s something I’d recommend to everyone and not just because of its obvious non consumer benefits. It is a way of living that is light not only on the earth but you as an individual. Suddenly, what is truly important becomes clear. You start to realise what deserves a place in your life. Minimalism is never about lack or sacrificing what you love. There is a place in life for all that makes you happy.
Anchor your bed
This is an important point. Anchoring your furniture is not just a good idea from an aesthetic viewpoint but also in the interest of safety. Beds most often sit against a wall, but if your room is designed unconventionally, don’t be tempted to let it float in the middle of everything. Placement does matter. Once your bed is placed against a wall, you’ll be able to utilise the rest of your space and won’t have to walk around and risk knocking into furniture. There will be a sense of flow to your room. In keeping with Feng Shui tenets, design your room to follow sensical order. Anchoring your bed provides other benefits such as psychological security and guards you against drafts and noise.
Play around with textures
In your bedroom, you’ll want to engage tactile your tactile senses. There are so many easy ways to do this, which is why you should never pass on it!
If your home situation allows for it, experiment with wallpaper and paint colours. Remember that your design elements don’t have to be identical to match. They just have to be complementary. For example, you might have one plain wall painted baby pink and the other acting as a feature wall with say, poenie wallpaper or decals.
There are simpler ways to introduce texture into your space as well. They are budget friendly and make for easy swapping should you grow tired of looking at the same old thing. Add wooden elements in your preferred shade, buy a plush rug, a chair in natural woven fabric, linen blanket, a rattan mirror. Maybe you like clear glass and velvet bed frames.
Figure out a lighting plan
Good lighting is everything. This is something I have figured out through countless days of having to work with bad lighting. Most days I can only work up until 5:00 pm or so as this is when night time sets in. I am lucky enough to have big windows so utilise natural lighting as much as I can. In the afternoon it can get terribly bright, so I end up closing the blinds most of the way.
What I’d really like is a lamp. Warm lighting for me is the way to go, even though it isn’t the best for photos. The lights in my room are bright white and so hard on the eyes. That’s essentially why I never have them on, but my current lighting situation is just not good enough!
Utilise smart storage
While I like to think that if you need storage, you have too many belongings, sometimes there is a need for more room. I have built in storage in my cupboard- next to a hanging rack is two big compartments, one above the other, then a set of three drawers. This is where I keep my skincare and makeup, books, cameras and other photography tools. Under bed storage is another brilliant idea as once again, it is completely out of sight but still easily reachable. I have boxes for magazines, art supplies and two crates for clothes I’m selling over on my depop.
Ikea is my all time go to for diverse and affordable storage options, among so many other things. Ikea is a Scandinavian brand and they believe strongly in simple living. Their designs reflect this perfectly. Better still, some beds have built in drawers. How handy is that?
Hide cords and other similar clutter
My bedroom set up is great in that there are never any visible cords. I have power points next to my dresser, which I only use when I plug in my diffuser. The other power point is right next to my bed- I keep my charging cables here for both my phone and laptop. It’s really handy for charging devices overnight.
It’s small clutter and out of place objects like these that can make even a tidy room look not quite right. Make sure that everything in your room is placed there intentionally. In my old house a couple of years ago, I had lanterns wrapped around my bed frame. While they were so pretty, I had the power cord visible and it completely ruined the look.
Decide on a theme, mood and colour palette
The theme of your bedroom and resulting colour palette are two crucial aspects of designing a space you love and doing it right. They both overlap in the sense that once you’ve made a decision on one of the two, the other is answered for you.
It is good to consider mood and colour theory too. Dark colours can be seen as cosy and enveloping while gentle whites brighten and give life to a space. Personally, I prefer stark whites and neutrals as opposed to brighter colours. If plain doesn’t do it for you though, science dictates that the colours people find most relaxing are essentially pastels- pale pinks, purples, greens and blues.
The theme of my room can be summed up in three words as minimalist scandinavian chic. I use warm tones, gold metal accents, light wood and lots of florals. My colour palette is largely comprised of white, neutrals, dusky pink and rust. I bring in other colours through wall art and prints.
Choose plants that suit your space
Back in my old place I had a beautiful monstera plant I’d gotten from Ikea- I’d been wanting one for a long time!
It’s a brilliant indoor plant that thrives off many different light conditions, which makes it easy to keep up with. I had a sort of tropical theme going on at that point. I also kept succulents and cacti for a while. They don’t require exorbitant amounts of watering and are cute little things. Plants freshen and improve air quality whilst invoking feelings of peacefulness. A win win if you ask me!
Buy beautiful sheets and a doona that is right for you- keep in mind weight, size and the fabrics breathability
For gorgeous high quality french linen, I Love Linen is my go to. While slightly on the pricier side, proper bedding is an investment we should all make. I have the quilt cover in dreamy rust shade desert rose and fitted and loose sheet set in blush. It’s such a sweet combination. Linen is a breathable fabric as it is, but the I Love Linen collection is stonewashed, making it even more so and adding softness you’d only get from wear. Around the same time I got new bedding, I also changed my quilt to have more volume and be fluffier and warmer. This has come in handy as winter approaches and the nights get colder. While I’m now adding extra blankets, the quilt is just right for all year round use.
these are some great tips!
Thank you so much Christina! 🙂
I love these ideas! 🙌 I’ve been trying to create an evening routine lately and you’ve made me realize that seeing my bedroom as a sanctuary could really benefit that ✨ I want to reduce clutter in my room and incorporate some more textures, the most dominant at the moment is my plum velvet headboard on my bed and I want to work around that with maybe some mustard shades as they’re my favourite. The theme of your room sounds so calming! 💫 Great post! 💕
I’m so glad you’ve felt inspired by these ideas Elsie! Reducing clutter really makes all the difference. You’ll feel it too. Introducing different textures into your space is a brilliant way to add visual interest. Your plum velvet headboard sounds gorgeous! Maybe you could follow a theme of jewel tones? Plum, deep pinks and aqua, white ☺️
I love the sound of that theme! 😍 Thanks for the ideas ✨💕
Have a great weekend! x
Such beautiful ideas!!! 😉
Thank you for reading lucy! ☺️

Thank you so much 😊
These are great ideas! I definitely think creating a theme for your bedroom is the way to go! I love minimal colours but sometimes a bright bed sheet. I think its just all about finding your style! xxx
I couldn’t agree more! Just add things in slowly and take away where you see fit. Creating a space you love is a process ☺️ thanks for reading gemma!
Thank you so much Gemma! A bright bed sheet can be a lot of fun. I used to have all white bedding but over the course of a year it started to yellow! Not nice at all.
You’re absolutely right- just a matter of figuring out what you like 😊
love this! I love using the minimal look in my room and i love my colour scheme but this post is making me want to re-do my room! :))
Thank you for reading Amelia! How would you describe your room style?
Have a great weekend x
These are great tips <3 I really need to work on removing clutter, the problem with me is I like to keep everything haha. Thanks for sharing all these great tips 🙂
Thank you so much! I promise, decluttering and making your space more minimal is the way to go. You’ll see and feel the difference! Lots of love 😊
I’m slowly doing that and it’s already helping so much!! I definitely feel more relaxed and cozy in my room too 🙂 thanks so much Maryam! 💕
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post so much!! I am a person who needs space to recharge and my bedroom is that space to me. So it has to feel comforting, safe and homey in order to make it possible for me to unwind. I think what really distincts my bedroom is that it is extremely personal – Almost each all has photos of friends and family on it because I find the memories those pictures represent to be comforting. Yellow-lighting also calms me down, so I hsve fairy lights and a lamp that casts beautiful shadows around my room.
I wish I could be better with plants lol, but I just can’t seem to keep anything alive for longer than a month 😂 I really love the pictures you included, our styles are very similar! And also, Pinterest is THE BEST thing for ideas to make your bedroom your sanctuary. xx
Thank you so much Fiona! I loved reading your comment ☺️ I like to keep my space minimal but still inject my personality in somehow. My room at the moment is looking pretty boho!
I love that you have so many photos up. They truly can transport you to another time and place. Pure magic. I have two photo walls up and just find them so dreamy. I love waking up to those sights. I also have those old school film reel/photo booth pictures up. I even got a lamp too! No more harsh white light. The shadows it creates are so pretty.
Plants are lovely, aren’t they? I used to be a total plant mum. Had one of those ikea carts where I kept my succulents and cacti! My room doesn’t fit that theme anymore though, so I prefer dried flowers.
Have a great weekend!
Great ideas, Maryam! My room is pretty small so I have a minimal vibe going on anyways, but I do really want a rug! The only problem is that the standard size wouldn’t fit… I’ll have to look into it. I also want to create an inspiration ‘board’ on my wall. So many quarantine activities I could be getting up to! Lovely post as always. You have such awesome ideas 🙂
Thank you so much Erin! Designing your bedroom to fit your style and reflect who you are can be a lot of fun. A great way to be creative and mix and match!
I have photo walls up which count as my sort of inspiration board. That and pinterest really ☺️
Thank you for reading!
Greeat post! Im moving into a much smaller room in August than im used to and have been so worried about space, i will definitely be using your ideas about smart storage, thank you! X
When I moved from a townhouse to apartment I had the same struggles! It did kick off my minimalist journey though 😊 you’ll find ways!
Have a great weekend xx

Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the post 😊
Love the aesthetic of this post! Everything looks so light and airy, so relaxing. You’ve used some really great photos to showcase this! Great tips as well .xx
Thank you so much Chloe 🥰
I adore this!! I for one know entirely what you mean about needing to live clutter free. Whenever my room is the slightest bit untidy (books and scrap papers piling up on my bedside table, my record player…pretty much everywhere!!) I feel so unorganized and unable to create!! As for plants, I really need to get some!!
It’s just a feeling like no other. Your whole life could be in shambles but having a clean, tidy space makes things feel more manageable! x
Oh my I love this post so much! When you first published it I actually bookmarked to come back to over the weekend while revamping my room!x
