Come the closure of the Rumsey specialist Rose Nursery of Dural in the late 1980’s, two flowers of each variety were gifted to Heritage Roses. The Rumsey Rose Garden, opened in 1995, is tucked away in a corner of Parramatta Park, featuring some of the oldest roses in the colony. For many generations, the Rumsey Rose Garden site was part of the home territory of the Burramatta clan of the Darug Aboriginal people, Australia’s first settlers. With the grand establishment of the colonial Rose Hill settlement, it soon turned into a busy government lumberyard. In 1790, Lieutenant Watkin Tench made record of the twenty four convict carpenters and sawyers that sought employment there. When the lumberyard was relocated by Governor Macquarie in 1815, the area became an entryway to the Governor’s private domain, complete with a guard house built at the gate. In the 1880’s, the Macquarie Street Gatehouse was built to replace the guard house. The Rose Hill Bowling Club took over and established a club house, bowling greens, croquet lays and tennis courts. In the 1980’s, the buildings were demolished.
The Rumsey Rose Garden came to be through the kindness and goodwill of couple Heather and Roy Rumsey. They graciously donated their entire collection of heritage rose species to the City of Parramatta. In the park’s outermost southeastern corner lies Rumsey Rose Garden. Even rose experts familiar with the bright blooms are likely to spot an unfamiliar variety. The garden is brilliantly diverse and reaches its highest expression in the months of May, October and November. A visit outside of these times however is equally becoming. The lovely central lawn is made for picknicking and sunbathing under. Should you find yourself feeling peckish, Macquarie Gatehouse Tea Rooms, located in a pastel cottage nearby, serves scrumptious high tea with and without bubbly. If you’d prefer a coffee, Circa Espresso and cafe Georgie Boy are equally fitting.

Lovely photos!! You’re so pretty. 😊
Also, the first one you did with your head leaned over the pink flowers, two little tree bunches pop up perfectly above your head and it’s SO CUTE. It looks like you have little green tufts of hair and I thought it was adorable. 😊❤

You are so gorgeous! 😍 and the garden looks amazing, I love the close-ups of all the flowers. We have a similar rose garden in the city I’m from that I love to go to, just walk around and look at & smell all of the different-colored roses. It’s always nice being in nature and seeing its beauty!
Oh, absolutely. Nature is so wondrous. There is a true miracle to be found in all that lives and breathes. Plants and flowers are such a prime example of living art- they are formed so perfectly and intentionally! How lucky we are to have these sights to see. Happy to hear you have a local rose garden to visit also! x

These photos are breath-takingly beautiful, and so are you! Your appreciation for nature and natural beauty emanates from your work. You clearly have an artists/designer’s mind so I have no doubt that you’ll make an incredible interior designer. Also, I learnt something new about those gardens! So thank you.
Well, that’s wonderful to hear Denise! I’m glad I could teach you a little something about the Gardens. I wasn’t previously aware of its history either. Thank you so much for your kind words. Interior design, decoration and being in pretty spaces makes my heart happy x
Heather and Roy Rumsey are legends for donating their roses – what a stunning place! There’s a place one of my blogging friends, Isabel, and I used to love visiting in Kensington back in London that had a rose garden. They’re beautiful places. Also, I think I mentioned this is in your previous post but I utterly love that sweater vest combination! xx
You are too kind, thank you Mia. Yes indeed- Heather and Roy Rumsey have left quite the beautiful legacy for themselves. They are in each and every flower that graces that garden! x
How lovely! I hope you and Isabel get to visit Kensington’s rose garden again when travel resumes. Do you think you’ll make a trip back home to catch up with everybody?
Glad you adore the sweater vest. Me too. I think you’d really pull off this look. I can see you making the sweater vest trend really pop with lots of colour.
These are such gorgeous photos, Maryam! You look lovely and that garden seems like the perfect place for a picnic! 🤍
