Take a minute to consider the potential for entrapment in New Year’s resolutions. We are so easily taken by the promise of an ideal brought about as a result of specific goals or plans. We imagine a version of self that is completely undone and then rebuilt from the very foundation to be superior, rescued, enlightened, mature, carefree and effortlessly put together. In a perfect world we’d be able to pick and choose qualities to attain that represent us accurately, creating a patchwork of all we aim to be and discarding the rest. You can hold space for compassionate curiosity about all your future may hold whilst being realistic as it pertains to the resources you have and hands you’ve been dealt.
The truth is that there’s a difference between who you want to be eventually and who you are presently. There will always be a divide because it’s human nature to strive for betterment. We find purpose and thrill in the chase and would be bored without it. Growing up is about identifying as a work in progress. It’s about celebrating your wins, taking baby steps where improvement is required and assigning value to the journey. Don’t have tunnel vision and be so focused on your eventual destination that you miss the view along the way. We’ve become greedy, drunk on possibility and blinded to what would truly serve us and be transformative in our situation. If possibility is the energetic flow of grace, what will you lean towards? Do you work for a paycheck or wait to win the lottery? Do you check to see if their grass is greener or continue watering yours? There is no better time to live your life than in the present! Don’t put it on hold.
There is a certain allure to roleplaying and inserting ourselves into the lives of others whether passively or actively. We consume a spectrum of voyeuristic content and fall into a mindset of comparison and lack, determined to live up to the standard of today’s glossy highlight reels. We fill our calendars with social events to quell loneliness and excuse the fact that we aren’t content with sitting in solitude, aren’t comfortable with our own company. We call into question our looks, nature, personality and personal circumstances, allowing them to become an indictment on inherent worth and perpetuate a false sense of hope about how different life would be if the narrative flipped. You have to let go of needing to prove yourself.
The most groundbreaking prospects exist within our hearts. They require the inner work to be done. Redemption, openness, mercy and cleansing through forgiving and being forgiven, through moving on from and letting go. Through the release of binding, crushing weight. The possibility of finding a soul partner who mirrors our love, is reciprocal in effort, intention and investment, aligning with our vision. The possibility of being unbridled, youthful and exuberant in our joy, laughter and excitement. The possibility of releasing tension and grief held so tightly in the bones, body and our energetic centre. The possibility of sunrise and sunset, the ocean tide, the moonlight, the birdsong.
Let your yearning for possibility to play out in miraculous and grandiose ways be within your blood and breath, ligaments and practices. May it supports your body as it flows through the twists and turns that come your way. Instead of striving in vain towards an elusive and slippery ideal, sink deeply into who you are and the stories that hold you together, the narratives that shape your life and give it meaning and distinction. Do they open you to possibilities of wellbeing and wholeheartedness or keep you in an oppressive holding pattern of rigidity, resentment, bias, hatred and abandonment towards yourself, others and the places you call home? Comparison kills your creativity- there is room for your unique voice, experience and insight.
There is a knock at the door in anticipation of your well reception. Let all that will unfold. Allow yourself to bend and flex and surrender as needed, resting in the knowledge that there is a time and place for you to roar. You are not limited to quiet reservation. Like a lock previously enshrouded in a tangle of ivy, united with its key, you are becoming closer and more intimate with your essential self, with the divine, with the heartbeat of life that pulses and dances to an unseen rhythm. Trade being better for being true and walking in authenticity. This is what will set you free- nothing held back and nothing held onto. May all you do flow from you like a river. I pray that your growth game is strong and that you never hold back on re introducing yourself to the world.
Being open to new possibilities at this time of year is definitely something great to think about – thanks for sharing Maryam!
